Masks

Local adjustments that track your global edits

Create named masks for parts of the frame: linear gradients, radial gradients, brush and AI-powered object-recognition layers stack, subtract and invert freely — and every adjustment is a delta relative to the base parameters. Darken the sky by a stop, then change the global exposure: the sky stays a stop darker.

Mask editing: a radial gradient's coverage shown as a live red overlay

Highlights

  • —Multiple named masks per photo, layered for combined local edits
  • —Four layer types: linear gradient, radial gradient, freehand brush, AI object recognition
  • —AI object recognition: one click on an object creates its selection; hovering previews the candidate live
  • —Grow / Shrink buttons cycle the candidate granularity, from a part up to the whole object
  • —Add/subtract and invert per layer, with stepless feathering
  • —Delta parameters: masked areas follow your global edits automatically
  • —Auto-adjust and region picking still work, writing back as deltas
  • —Edit in fit or 1:1 view; hover to see exactly what a mask covers
  • —Object identification runs entirely on-device and offline — photos are never uploaded

Four layer types, freely combined

Linear gradients transition along a line — drag the center handle to move, the guides to rotate, the end handles to set the range. Radial gradients are elliptical, with outer and inner ellipses controlling shape, size and feather. Brush layers paint freely with a ring cursor, the wheel resizing the brush, and painted strokes can be repositioned as a whole. Object layers are driven by AI recognition — click an object in the frame and a selection covering it is generated automatically. Each layer can add or subtract, can be inverted, and overlapping weights stack naturally.

Object layers: select with one click

Click the Object button below the layer list to enter pick mode: hovering the preview live-tints the candidate object under the cursor, so you see what would be identified before clicking; a single click then generates a selection layer covering that object, with a busy indicator while identification runs. If the extent is not quite right, the Grow / Shrink buttons on the layer row cycle between candidate granularities at the clicked position — from a part of the object up to the whole thing — with the red overlay staying live throughout. Object layers support add/subtract, invert, feather and delete just like the other types, and are saved with the photo automatically; identification runs entirely on-device and offline, and photos are never uploaded.

Delta semantics that track the base

Mask parameters are deltas relative to the photo's base parameters, not absolute values: a new mask is all zeros — no local adjustment — and +0.2 means "0.2 more than the base here". Overlapping masks add up, and when you later change the global parameters, masked areas keep their relative offset. Panel auto buttons and region picking work while a mask is active, converting results back into deltas; pasting parameters or applying a preset to a mask converts them too.

  • —Adjustable: tone, channel exposure/contrast/purity/hue, essentials, white balance, tone curves, color boost, effects, color grading, mixer, point color, calibration
  • —Global parameters (paper, sprockets, vignette, lens correction, sharpening…) are greyed out while a mask is active
